Alright, ladies (and gents), let’s talk about one of life’s more soul-sucking topics: budgeting. I know—it sounds about as fun as watching paint dry, but just listen. I promise you, if you're living in a glamorous city like Dubai and trying to juggle debt, it’s time to put on your financial big-girl pants, grab your calculator, and get ready to separate the essentials from the non-essentials.

I’m not saying you need to give up your love of brunches with a view, but if you're trying to pay off debt, some tough choices are coming your way. But don’t worry—I’ll guide you through this like a guru who knows her way around a spreadsheet (and online shopping)

Essentials to Spend On:

Because you cant cut back on absolutely everything that's impossible.

1. Rent- Unless you're living the dream and your villa in Palm Jumeirah is somehow rent-free (and if you are, pls DM me, tell me how), rent is a non-negotiable. Whether you're in a tiny studio or sharing a cozy flat in DIFC, housing is the base of your survival pyramid, not to mention the whole “keeping a roof over your head” thing.

Small Tip: Take a look at your current living situation. Is there anything that’s a bit extravagant for where you are financially? Maybe moving to a slightly smaller space for a couple of months could free up some extra cash.

2. Utilities & Internet - The bills? Definitely, that’s essential. We all need it, unless you’re somehow mastered the art of surviving without. Same goes for electricity and Wi-Fi. How else will you stay connected to your life.

3. Groceries - Eating out is cute, but eating in... Even cuter for your bank account. Keep things fresh by budgeting for meals you can cook at home. And let’s not forget that meal prepping doesn’t just save you time—it saves you money, too.

4. Insurance - Trust me, this is the part where you don’t want to be penny-pinching. Whether you’re covered through work or have your own plan, healthcare is something you should definitely keep on the priority list. There’s nothing cute about getting sick and having no way to pay for it. Invest in health insurance as part of your "future-you" strategy.

Non-Essentials to Skip (or Just Cut Down On):

Because we need to be a little ruthless to meet those financial goals.

1. That Morning Latte - Urgh, 29 dirham every single morning on a large caramel latte., I get it. That latte is your little moment of joy. BUT: let's say you’re spending 20 AED a day on coffee. Do that 5 days a week for a month, and you're looking at 400 AED. Cut back to brewing your own magic at home, or pop into a more budget-friendly café. I promise you won’t miss it... and that extra 400 AED can go towards paying down that debt!

2. Weekly Brunches at Rooftop Bars - Okay, the view from those Dubai rooftop bars is amazing, and I know you love it. But if you’re serious about slaying debt, you're going to have to dial it down. That’s right, the weekly brunches that drain your wallet quicker than you can say *ladies night*—they got to go. Aim for a more occasional splurge, and in the meantime, maybe dial down the drinking a little to save a few pennies.

3. Impulse Shopping - When you’re budgeting for debt, it’s time to put the brakes on those not-so-necessary wardrobe upgrades. No more purchasing things you’ll only wear once (you don’t need another new handbag right now). Instead, challenge yourself to find stylish and budget-friendly outfits that won’t make your credit card ding in your wardrobe.

4. Taxi Rides (Yes, Even in the Heat) - Dubai summers are a sweaty affair, and sometimes the idea of waiting for public transport just isn't in the cards. But Uber and Careem every single time can seriously add up. When possible, try taking the metro or maybe even take a stroll. Plus, walking in Dubai can be an adventure if you’ve never really explored your neighborhood.

5. Unnecessary Subscriptions - Spotify, Netflix, Apple Music, and every other digital service can add up quickly if you're not keeping track. Take a moment to evaluate the subscriptions you're really using. The one you never open? Cancel it. The 3rd streaming service you rarely watch? Bye-bye. That 50AED here and 150AED there really adds up.

Final Thoughts: Essentials and non-essentials when spending

In a city like Dubai, living your best life and paying off debt can feel like walking a tightrope. But you've got this. Cutting back on a few luxuries might sting a little now, but trust me—nothing will feel better than being freeeeeee! Simply by knowing your Essentials and non-essentials when spending can really help.

And let’s not forget: Once you’re debt-free? You can go back to brunch with a clear conscience and more to spend on drinks. For now, just remember: it’s all about finding that sweet spot between living for the moment.
