Ah, Dubai. The city of luxury, towering skyscrapers, and shopping malls that are practically theme parks. If you're a UK girlie like me, moving here can feel like you've stepped into a glittery, palm tree-filled dream. But after a few months of looking at designer bags and sipping iced coffees you realize — this city is not cheap. Now lets talk about future proofing your mindset so that you don't run into any issues.

1. Embrace the “Do I Really Need It?” Mentality

Here’s a secret: those fancy Dubai malls? They're designed to make you think you need that £500 handbag, when you really just need a strong cup of coffee and a solid WiFi connection. So, whenever you're tempted to tap tap tap away at that apple pay, stop and ask yourself, “Do I really need this?” Nine times out of ten, the answer is “no.” For those days when you’re feeling extra fancy (and slightly deluded), set a rule: only buy things that are practical and genuinely add value to your life.

2. Get Savvy with Groceries: It's All About the Basics

Grocery shopping in can be shocking if you’re used to Sainsbury's deals and Tesco meal deals. But it doesn’t have to break the bank. Find your local market, make a list, and stock up on basics. Frozen veg bags, rice, pasta, and those giant packs of toilet paper — they last forever and won't leave your money crying in the corner. Because nobody puts baby in the corner.

3. Cut the “Invisible” Expenses

You know the ones. The subscriptions you forgot about. You're paying for apps you barely remember. This is a classic mistake, and if you’re trying to stay debt-free, it’s time to trim the fat. Take a peek at your bank account every few months and cancel any subscriptions you no longer need. It’s like a spring cleaning, but for your banking app. Trust me, you'll feel lighter — and your monthly money will better off.

4. Public Transport: I know, I know a drag really

Here’s the thing about Dubai: it's not London when it comes to walking everywhere. And while taxis are as everywhere as the sand, they’re not always your best financial friend. So get familiar with the Metro if its close by. They're clean, air-conditioned here (thankfully), and, more importantly, inexpensive. Again its not the London underground- a real life hell.

5. Avoid the “Keep Up with the trends” Syndrome

In an everchanging and evolving planet, it’s easy to fall into the trap of wanting to live a glamorous lifestyle just like the influencers and millionaires you see on your Insta feed. But trust me, you don’t need to spend every weekend brunching or buying designer just because someone on your social media is doing it. Living doesn’t require you to match the lifestyle anyone— but you do need to match the budget of a reasonably sensible person. Find activities that are fun, not financially ruinous.

6. Buy Secondhand (Yes, Really)

Here’s one of Dubai’s underrated gems: secondhand shopping. Dubai’s expat community is always rotating in and out, which means there are always great finds on Facebook Marketplace, thrift stores, and secondhand shops. From furniture to clothes and big brands, you’d be surprised at what you can grab at a fraction of the original price. Plus, you’re doing your bit for the planet, and your wallet will thank you.

7. Always Ask for a Discount (Seriously)

You’d think in a world the way it is now , there’d be no room for negotiation. But here's the thing: Anywhere can be a bargain hunter’s paradise if you know where to look. You’d be amazed at how much you can save by just asking for a discount. Whether it’s at a souk, a restaurant, or even your local gym, just ask. The worst that can happen is they say no, and you carry on with your life. But hey, sometimes they’ll say yes, and suddenly you’re living the dream — with extra cash in your pocket.

Final Thoughts: Live Smart, Not Hard : Staying Debt-Free

At the end of the day, living in Dubai for right now is a privilege, not a burden. It's easy to get swept up in the fast-paced, luxury-driven lifestyle, but staying grounded and avoiding debt is your ticket to truly enjoying the ride. For future me, keeping things and staying practical, mindful of my spending, and remembering: you can have fun and live a fulfilling life without draining your bank account.

So here’s to a life of smart decisions, savvy savings, and staying debt-free and learning how to future-proof your wallet for your older and wiser self.
